Commissions (Per Side / Round Turn)

Trading

Definition

The payment for each contract execution. A per-side commission is charged upon entry and again upon exit, and Round Turn is both sides together. In prop firms, commissions are deducted from the account's profit and loss, thus affecting the profit target, the threshold, and the days counted for payout.

Detailed explanation

In a single trade, it seems negligible, but a trader who makes dozens of micro trades a day pays a noticeable amount against a target of several thousand dollars. Beyond the firm's or connection fee, there are also exchange and NFA fees. When comparing firms, check the commission based on the connection type and contract, and calculate it based on your style: a scalper in micros will feel it much more than a trader who makes two mini trades a day.

An example from the prop world

At FTMO Futures, the firm's commission is $0.20 per side per micro contract. 50 round-trip micro trades per day are 100 sides, $20 FTMO commission only, before exchange fees.

How it works at the firms on this site

Based on the rules listed on our firm pages. Rules get updated, so check the firm's page before buying.

ES contract

The S&P 500 mini futures contract, one of the most traded contracts in the world. Each point is worth $50, and the tick is 0.25 points, meaning $12.50 per contract.

MES contract

The micro version of ES: the same S&P 500 index at a tenth of the size. Each point is worth $5 and the tick (0.25 point) is worth $1.25, so you can build a precise position even with a small account.

Slippage

The difference between the price at which you wanted to enter or exit and the price at which the order was actually filled. It mainly occurs with market and stop orders, during sharp movements, news, and hours of low liquidity.

Profit target

The profit you need to build up in the evaluation to move to a funded account, without crossing the drawdown threshold and without breaking any other rule.

Rithmic connection

A connection provider through which the platform receives market data and sends orders to the account. The firm determines whether your account runs on Rithmic or Tradovate, and the connection determines which platforms can be used.

News trading policy

This is a risk management rule in funded trading accounts that prohibits traders from opening, closing or modifying active positions within a set time window (usually a few minutes) before, during and after the release of major high-impact economic events (Tier One).
